Laser Hair Removal Treatment Benefits

Laser Treatment for Hair Removal

Laser hair removal consists of destroying the hair follicles using laser energy to prevent it from growing back. During the treatment, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the hair pigment (melanin). Light energy is converted into heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs inside the skin (hair follicles) that produce hair. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth. Multiple laser hair removal treatments are required for hair removal, and maintenance treatments may also be needed. Laser hair removal is most effective for people with light skin and dark hair; however, at FCP Dermatology we also have a laser with a long wavelength to treat darker skin types with dark hair in smaller areas.

It is possible to treat unwanted hair anywhere, the only exception is around the eye. The most common areas to treat are the underarms, legs, back, chest, bikini, genital area, and face.

Permanent hair reduction

Unlike waxing and other traditional methods, laser hair removal permanently reduces hair growth.

Helps treat skin problems

Treats certain skin conditions such as folliculitis and hidradenitis suppurativa.

Save time and money

In the long run, patients will end up saving time and money on waxing or shaving since the hair is reduced permanently.

High Success Rate

An average of 5 to 8 sessions are needed to achieve permanent hair reduction by 80-90%.

Which laser is best for Laser Hair Removal

A Diode laser is the most effective laser for destroying the hair follicle. It is important to ask what type of laser is being used. IPL or Intense Pulsed Light can also be used for laser hair removal, however, it is much less effective and will require many more treatments to achieve less hair removal than a Diode laser. Darker skin types are more prone to pigment changes and require an Nd:YAG laser which has a longer wavelength to safely treat darker skin types.

At FCP Dermatology, our team of experienced, educated, and qualified laser technicians together with our on-site Dermatologist will determine which laser and what settings are right for your skin type. We have only the best laser technology on the market at FCP Dermatology and it is fast, effective, and virtually painless in comparison to other lasers. Our laser uses suction technology during the treatment which significantly reduces pain, making the treatment as comfortable as possible for patients. Don’t risk permanent scarring, pigment changes, and lasers that are not optimal for hair removal, come to FCP Dermatology for a pain-free experience that works.

What to expect when getting a Laser Hair Removal treatment

Before the procedure: You must shave the area being treated as close to the skin as possible the evening before your treatment. This allows the laser to deliver energy deeper into the skin, so that it may reach and destroy the root of the hair. There cannot be any long hair on the area to be treated. If the area has not been shaved completely, we can shave it for you.  Stop using any Retin-A, Glycolic Acid or other actives that you are using on the treatment area for 3 days before the treatment.  Do not expose the area to the sun prior to the session Do not use self-tanning creams.

During the procedure:  Indicate if you are taking any medication or if you suffer from any illness. The area to be treated must be clean of creams or deodorants. Both patients and staff must always wear protective glasses.

After the procedure: The treated area is generally mildly swollen and/or red immediately after treatment. This typically resolves within 24 hours. You may feel discomfort similar to a sunburn. This resolves after 12-24 hours. You may feel itchy in areas that have been treated for 12-24 hours.  Typically, the treated hairs will begin to fall out approximately 7-14 days after treatment. Do not tweeze or pull them out during this process. You can continue to shave daily if needed for aesthetic purposes.  Acne-like lesions may occur in areas after treatment. DO NOT squeeze or pick the pimples as they typically resolve after 24-48 hours.  Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area for at least 2 weeks post-procedure.

Some of the contraindications are:

- Active skin infections in the area to be treated (Herpes, impetigo, etc.).
- Oral retinol or isotretinoin consumption.

Laser hair removal sessions can last from 5 to 15 minutes for small areas. Sessions on larger areas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

The results of laser hair removal are permanent since we are destroying the hair follicle. However, annual, or semi-annual maintenance sessions may be necessary according to the hair growth pattern.

Laser should not be combined with waxing as waxing pulls out the hair follicle which is the target of the laser. Without a hair follicle laser hair removal will not be successful.

Laser Hair Removal is considered an aesthetic procedure, it is not covered by medical insurance.

There is a permanent decrease in the quantity and thickness of hair, however not every single hair can be removed, and some maintenance treatments may be required.

Since lasers are not regulated in Canada, anyone can operate a laser. Unfortunately, when you go to an inexperienced and unqualified laser technician pigment changes and permanent scarring can occur. Blistering, scabbing, or other changes in skin texture can also occur if the person operating the laser is not qualified. At FCP Dermatology all our laser technicians have a degree from a 2-year program in laser technology and have years of experience operating many types of advanced lasers found in Dermatology clinics. As with all our procedures, laser hair removal is overseen by our on-site Dermatologist.

At FCP Dermatology, we have the most painless laser on the market. Pain is something very variable depending on each person’s sensitivity and skin type. There are body areas where the skin is more sensitive and there may be some mild discomfort.

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated light energy to target and destroy hair follicles, preventing hair growth in treated areas over time.

Multiple sessions are usually required for optimal results. The exact number varies depending on factors like the treatment area, hair color, and individual response to the treatment.

Sessions are typically spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow time for hair in different growth phases to be treated effectively.

Laser hair removal can be performed on various body areas, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and more.

Cost varies depending on the treatment area, location, and the number of sessions required. It's best to consult with a practitioner for an accurate estimate.
