What to expect during your laser tattoo removal treatment
Lasers are not regulated in Canada so anyone can operate a laser. We do unfortunately see burns and pigment changes from lasers being operated by unqualified technicians at other clinics. Be careful and do your research. A Dermatology clinic with an on-site Dermatologist and licensed experienced laser technicians is where you want to go. At FCP Dermatology, all treatments are supervised and overseen by our on-site Double Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Kristy Bailey.
A careful analysis of your tattoo will be performed by our team of laser technicians and on-site Dermatologist. We will advise you on the number of treatments necessary to give you the best results. Hair should be shaved if it is within the treatment area. Please shave the night before treatment to avoid any irritation. Please do not tan or use self-tanners for 2 weeks prior to treatment and for 2 weeks after the treatment.
Depending on the colour of the tattoo, the appropriate wavelength will be chosen. The handpiece is waved over the tattoo, immediately showing frosting over the treatment area. The procedure is quick, efficient, and effective. Since we have an on-site Dermatologist at FCP Dermatology, local or topical anesthesia may be applied to minimize any discomfort.
Patients may experience swelling, redness, and in some cases develop blisters on the treated area. These are normal side effects of tattoo removal and subside with proper care. Follow all post-care instructions provided to you during your appointment at FCP Dermatology. Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks following treatment and use an SPF 50 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen. Avoid skin irritants (products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, etc.) until the skin is fully healed.
