How does Belkyra work?
The active ingredient in Belkyra is deoxycholic acid. This acid is a naturally occurring enzyme in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fatty tissue under the chin – Belkyra destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin.
Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, therefore no further treatment is required once the desired aesthetic goal is achieved.

What To Expect During a Belkyra Deoxycholic Acid Procedure
Before treatment begins, our Dermatologist will examine the area under and around your chin in order to determine if Belkyra is suitable for you. She will then tailor your treatment to the amount of fat under your chin and your desired aesthetic goal. Treatment should only be administered by a Belkyra specialist physician, such as our on-site Double Board-Certified Dermatologist. The process may take around 20 minutes.
During the procedure – Belkyra is quick procedure which is minimally invasive and does not require anesthesia. You will be provided with an ice pack to make the treatment more comfortable. The submental chin fat is mapped out by Dr. Bailey and then injected using thin sterile needles. A vibration device will be placed on the skin beside the needle to lessen any discomfort.
After the Procedure – It is expected that the injection site will be swollen for the first few days after treatment. This swelling is indicative of the destruction of fat cells, so it indicates a good result. Unlike liposuction, there is no need to wear a compression garment and there are no open wounds or sutures requiring removal.

Belkyra, also known as Kybella in some regions, is an injectable treatment specifically designed to reduce submental fullness, often referred to as a "double chin." It contains a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which helps break down and absorb fat cells in the treated area.
Belkyra injections can be mildly painful or uncomfortable. You may notice a slight burning sensation, but it is a generally well-tolerated treatment. You will be given an ice pack to apply to the treated area to ease any mild discomfort and make the procedure more comfortable.

The number of Belkyra treatment sessions required can vary depending on individual factors, such as the severity of submental fullness and desired results. Most people require multiple treatment sessions, typically spaced about four to six weeks apart, to achieve optimal outcomes.
Belkyra is a cosmetic procedure which is not covered by OHIP
Belkyra works by breaking down and destroying the fat cells - so once destroyed, that fat does not form again. This allows the adipocytes to be permanently removed.
Belkyra can produce inflammation that may last for a few weeks to a month. Although the swelling will visibly disappear after a few days, the residual swelling may last between treatments, slowly improving after every session. We recommend to avoid other treatments around the treated area. However, Belkyra™ can be combined with other aesthetic treatments such as peels, lasers, facials, Botox, and Hyaluronic acid fillers in other areas of the face following your Belkyra™ treatment.
We recommend a minimum of 3 Belkyra treatments. Depending on the amount of fat and the patient's expectations, 3 to 6 sessions are needed, spaced 4 weeks apart. The number of treatments required will depend on the severity of each patient's case. After your last treatment, our team will analyze your results and may recommend follow-up sessions to reach your desired result.
Yes, Belkyra is specifically indicated for the treatment of submental fullness or a double chin. It is not recommended or approved for use in other areas of the body.
