Hormone Replacement Therapy
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy For Men
Our hormones are responsible for regulating many different functions in our bodies. They play a crucial role in maintaining the proper functioning of many systems in the body. Imbalances or deficiencies in hormone levels can lead to various medical conditions and symptoms. As men age, their hormone levels can decrease, leading to various symptoms and health issues. The “normal” range for hormone levels can vary, and patients who fall within the lower end of the normal range may suffer from hormone related symptoms. Our goal is to optimize your hormone levels and treat the symptoms at hand. Bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the hormones naturally produced in the human body. When properly prescribed by an expert, such as Dr. Bailey, bioidentical hormones are used to restore hormone balance and alleviate these symptoms. Unlike synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones are derived from natural sources such as soy or yam and are formulated to match the molecular structure of the hormones produced in the body.
With FCP Dermatology’s balancing and replacement therapy, we can restore hormonal balance to relieve symptoms associated with aging and more importantly prevent the occurrence of common diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Our program includes advanced hormone panel testing and an in-depth consultation where we review your results and develop a tailored treatment plan to ensure optimization.

Testosterone has been shown to increase muscle strength and lean body mass, improve sexual response, prevent osteoporosis, protect against cardiovascular disease, increase energy, fight impotence, and improve mood and sense of well-being. Testosterone can slow down the physical decline that robs men of their energy, strength, and libido.
Thyroid Hormone is a metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that regulates temperature, metabolism and cerebral function. It contributes to energy levels, temperature, regulation, hair growth, weight, and body warmth. It increases fat breakdown, resulting in weight loss as well as lower cholesterol. It protects against cardiovascular disease and improves cerebral metabolism. It helps to prevent cognitive and memory impairment.
DHEA is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. This hormone is a precursor to other sex hormones. It reduces cardiovascular risk by increasing lipolysis or breakdown of fat. It also stimulates the immune system, restores sexual vitality, improves mood, decreases cholesterol and body fat. Recent studies point to DHEA as an anti-stress hormone, reversing the effects of stress on the immune system.

Benefits of Bioidentical Hormones Replacement Therapy
Bioidentical hormone therapy for men involves using hormones that are identical in structure to the hormones naturally produced in the male body. The therapy is often used to alleviate symptoms resulting from a decreasing level of testosterone. As men age, their testosterone levels slowly start to decline resulting in lower energy, low libido, decreased muscle mass and strength, increased body fat, irregular moods and lower cognitive function. Bioidentical hormone therapy can help alleviate these symptoms by replacing the declining hormone levels with bioidentical versions of testosterone. Bioidentical hormones can also include thyroid hormone, specifically T3 and T4, to help treat symptoms of low mood, fatigue, hair loss, and weight gain.
Improved sexual function
Bioidentical testosterone can help to improve libido, erectile function, and overall sexual performance in men.
Increased muscle mass and strength
Testosterone plays an important role in building and maintaining muscle mass and strength.
Decreased body fat
Low testosterone levels have been linked to an increased risk of obesity and metabolic disorders.
Improved mood and cognitive function
Testosterone also plays a role in mood regulation and cognitive function.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Bioidentical hormone treatment (BHRT) involves the use of hormones that are structurally identical to the hormones naturally produced by the human body. These hormones, derived from plant sources, are compounded to match an individual's specific hormonal needs.
The length of time an individual should take bioidentical hormones depends on several factors, such as age, medical history, hormone levels, and the specific hormones being treated. In general, bioidentical hormone therapy is used for a limited period of time to restore hormone levels, and the treatment varies from patient to patient.
In general, BHRT for men is typically prescribed for several months to a few years. However, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as each individual's situation is unique. Dr. Bailey will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your specific needs and goals. Regular monitoring of hormone levels and symptoms is important to ensure the ongoing safety and effectiveness of BHRT.
Bioidentical hormone therapy is an elective treatment not covered by OHIP. Check with your private insurance provider for their bioidentical hormone drug coverage.
Although bioidentical hormones can be prescribed by medical doctors, not many physicians actually educate themselves on this area of medicine. It is important to note that most physicians have very little to no knowledge or experience in prescribing bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical hormones is a specialized area of medicine, and very few physicians have completed advanced training in this area. Dr. Bailey has undergone extensive training with Dr. Neal Rouzier who is a pioneer in the bio-identical hormone replacement field, practicing almost since its inception. Dr. Bailey has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area of medicine and has become one of the elite physicians in Canada offering this program.
The main difference between bioidentical hormones and traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is that bioidentical hormones are derived from natural sources and are chemically identical to the hormones produced in the body, while traditional HRT uses synthetic hormones that are not identical to those produced in the body. Bioidentical hormone therapy is often customized to meet the specific needs of each individual patient, while traditional HRT typically involves standardized doses of synthetic hormones. Bioidentical hormones may have a lower risk of side effects compared to synthetic hormones, as they are identical to the hormones naturally produced in the body. Lastly, bioidentical hormone therapy is offered by specialized physicians, while traditional HRT is more widely available through general practitioners.
Depending on the hormones being administered, bioidentical hormones may be prescribed as a cream, pill, tablets, or injections. Dr. Bailey will thoroughly discuss all options and make a proper recommendation depending on several lifestyle factors and your blood test results.
BHRT is commonly used to address symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. It may also be beneficial for managing hormonal imbalances, improving bone density, and potentially reducing the risk of certain conditions such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
Multiple medical studies have proven that testosterone does not cause prostate cancer. Interestingly, men typically get prostate cancer when they are older and testosterone levels are naturally at their lowest. In fact, low levels of testosterone are associated with more aggressive tumors. No study has
shown that supplementing with testosterone increases your chances of getting prostate cancer. If one does develop prostate cancer, testosterone supplementation might accelerate the growth levels of the tumor. Therefore, there is a need to monitor the PSA on a regular basis when supplementing with testosterone.
BHRT is generally considered safe when prescribed and monitored by a qualified healthcare professional. However, as with any medical treatment, there may be risks and potential side effects. It's crucial to discuss individual medical history, risks, benefits, and any concerns with a healthcare provider before starting BHRT.
BHRT is not suitable for everyone, and its indication depends on individual factors, such as age, medical history, current medications, and hormonal balance. It's essential to consult with a knowledgeable healthcare provider who can assess these factors and determine if BHRT is a suitable option.
The duration of BHRT treatment varies depending on individual needs. Some women may require short-term treatment to manage acute menopausal symptoms, while others may benefit from long-term hormonal support. Regular monitoring and reassessment with a healthcare provider are essential to determine the appropriate duration of treatment.
Like any hormone therapy, BHRT may have potential side effects. These can include breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, acne, or changes in menstrual bleeding patterns. However, side effects can vary among individuals, and proper monitoring and adjustment of hormone dosages can often help minimize these effects.
