The sugar thread face and brow lift is performed by placing tensor threads in different areas of the face. The threads act similar to barbs which grip the surrounding tissue as they are lifted upwards. They act as an anchor to pull the skin upwards, resulting in an immediately lifted appearance. These threads are dissolvable (polydioxanone (PDO) is a sugar derivative) and therefore broken down by our bodies over time. Once they are inserted, the body’s natural healing process is triggered which stimulates collagen production. This collagen results in a more youthful and elevated brow, mid-face, or lower face.
At FCP Dermatology, the sugar thread face and brow lift is performed by our Double Board-Certified Surgical Dermatologist, Dr. Kristy Bailey. Dr. Bailey has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and specialized training in thread lifts and other surgical cosmetic procedures. Dr. Bailey has travelled internationally to hone the skills required to perform this procedure. Trust only a highly trained and experienced Surgical Dermatologist to execute this mini face & brow lift procedure.
The sugar thread lift is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure. The sugar-based thread with wing-like barbs is placed into the skin, where its wings grab onto and approximate the sagging skin, resulting in a firmer, tighter appearance. Sugar threads work in two ways. First, sugar threads lift and reposition sagging skin. Second, the threads stimulate collagen production resulting in long-term improvement of overall skin tightness. The threads are safe, dissolvable, and sterile. PDO threads are small threads made from a sugar molecule that is identical to the suture material used in surgery. When placed underneath the skin, the threads activate the reparative cells which trigger the production of new fibres of collagen and elastin.
The threads stimulate fibroblasts, which produce collagen and elastin. These fibers increase the elasticity and density of tissues.
The end result of the PDO sugar thread lift is an elevated brow, mid-face, or lower face without surgery.
Reverses signs of aging by lifting and tightening sagging skin, without leaving scars. PDO threads have little downtime.
These facial threads also stimulate circulation, so the skin is more oxygenated, smooth, and luminous.
People who are looking for a surgical alternative and wish to delay the onset of facial aging may benefit from the PDO thread lift procedure. The procedure is appropriate for anyone wishing to enhance the tautness and texture of loose skin. PDO threads are especially effective for those looking to lift the jowls, lower face and brow.
Generally, men and women suffering from mild to moderate sagging skin on the face are suitable candidates for this procedure.
Areas that can be treated include:
Dr. Bailey will perform a careful analysis of your face, and precisely mark the areas where the threads will be inserted. A local anesthetic will be injected into the treatment area to avoid any discomfort. We will use a long cannula (a blunt-tipped needle) to carefully and precisely insert the PDO threads after the anesthetic has taken effect. As the thread moves through the tissue underneath the skin, it lifts and firms the surrounding tissues. The number of threads used will depend on the skin’s condition and the areas that need to be treated. The threads anchor the skin upward, keeping it lifted. This is a minimally invasive procedure that takes 45 minutes to an hour.
Before the procedure – A cosmetic consultation will be done with our team of skin experts to determine if PDO threads are the right option for you. A careful analysis of your face will be performed, and the appropriate treatment will be determined. At this point, we will advise you of the number of threads necessary to achieve your desired result.
During the procedure – The treatment area will be thoroughly disinfected, and a local anesthetic is applied to ease discomfort. A small incision will be made, and the threads will be inserted with a blunt-ended needle called a cannula. The threads will be anchored into place and lifted.
After the procedure – PDO threads are considered minimally invasive, allowing patients to return to normal activities post-treatment. Patients are advised to avoid rubbing or touching the treated area to ensure the threads stay in place. Avoid drinking or smoking as this can hinder your body’s natural healing process. At FCP Dermatology, we schedule a 2-week follow-up appointment to monitor your progress.
At FCP Dermatology we are dedicated to the ongoing care of our patients to provide you with the best results possible.
In general, thread lifts are considered low-risk procedures with minimal recovery time when performed by an experienced Surgical Dermatologist. Some patients may experience some side effects following the procedure:
These side effects typically resolve after 2-3 days but in some cases last up to 2 weeks.

How long do the results of PDO thread lift last?
This minimally invasive procedure can provide patients with a lifted effect for up to 2 to 4 years. The collagen produced by the threads is permanent, however our bodies continue to lose collagen over time.
They are especially indicated in areas with mild or moderate skin sagging. Areas that can be treated are:
- Cheeks
- Jawline
- Eyebrow and upper eyelid lifting
PDO threads are considered a cosmetic procedure, not covered by any insurance providers.
On average, patients will need 4-6 threads on each side of the face. The number of threads will increase with the age of the patient and the severity of the sagging skin.
At FCP Dermatology, the sugar thread facelift is performed by our Double Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Kristy Bailey. Dr. Bailey has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, and the training and experience to provide expert results.
