Subcision for Acne Scars
Restore Smooth Skin with a Minimally Invasive Treatment
Subcision is a specialized procedure designed to improve the appearance of depressed acne scars—such as rolling or tethered scars—by releasing the fibrous bands beneath the skin that cause surface indentation.
Combined with Skinboosters, a cannula is inserted under the scars to break up the underlying tissue tethering them down. This allows the skin to lift and remodel, resulting in a smoother appearance.
At FCP Dermatology, subcision is performed by our Double Board-Certified Surgical Dermatologist, Dr. Kristy Bailey, an expert in scar revision techniques and facial aesthetics.
Treatment Areas
Subcision Treatment Areas
Subcision is ideal for improving the appearance of:
Cheeks
Targets rolling or atrophic acne scars commonly found in the cheeks. Releases scar tissue to allow smoother skin texture.
Jawline
Reduces deep, tethered scars that create uneven texture along the lower face.
Temples and Lower Face
Softens depressed scars and blends them into the surrounding skin. Stimulates collagen regeneration in scarred areas.
Subcision Treatment Overview
What is Subcision?
Acne scars can develop when inflammation from acne lesions damages the skin and underlying tissue. In the case of rolling or tethered scars, fibrotic strands form between the surface skin and deeper layers, pulling the skin downward and creating depressions.
Subcision is a minimally invasive technique that mechanically breaks up these bands using cannula. By releasing the tethering beneath the scar, the skin is freed to lift naturally. Over time, new collagen forms in the treated area, helping to improve texture, firmness, and evenness of the skin.
Benefits of Subcision for Acne Scars:
- Smooths Depressed Scars
Releases the fibrous bands that cause rolling or tethered scars and elevates skin indentations for a smoother surface. - Minimally Invasive
Performed without the need for anesthetics. Tiny entry points that heal quickly. - Stimulates Natural Collagen Production
Encourages skin remodeling and long-term textural improvement. Often paired with treatments like RF microneedling or PRP for enhanced results. - Little Downtime
Most patients experience mild swelling but can return to regular activities within a few days.
Subcision Treatment Candidates
Subcision Candidates
Subcision is best suited for individuals with:
- Rolling or atrophic acne scars
- Tethered scars that do not improve with surface treatments
- Good overall skin health and realistic expectations
This procedure is especially effective for those who have plateaued with topical or laser treatments and are looking for more targeted improvement. Ideal candidates are typically non-smokers, in good health, and understand that multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal results.

Subcision Treatment Experience
What to expect during a subcision treatment
Before the procedure – You will begin with a comprehensive consultation with our team of experts, who will assess the type and severity of your acne scarring to determine if subcision is right for you. We will also review your medical history, treatment goals, and discuss combination therapies if necessary.
During the procedure – A cannula is inserted beneath the skin to break apart the fibrous bands holding down the scar. Skinboosters are injected beneath the surface of the skin, providing an immediate result. You may feel some pressure or a popping sensation as the tethering is released. The procedure typically takes 20 minutes depending on the number of scars treated.
After the procedure – You can expect mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness in the treated area. Small entry points typically heal quickly. Most patients return to light activities within 24–48 hours. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions to optimize healing and prevent complications. Results will continue to improve as collagen production increases over the following weeks.
